Springsong Bird Seminar

April 19 - 23, 2010
April 26 - 30, 2010

It's time to begin thinking about the incredible gathering of songbird migrants (and others!) we have in late April, and the small group of birders that experience it with the GOS.

Despite the name "seminar," this is five consecutive all-day field trips on the Upper Texas Coast, from 8am to when the songbird migrants start settling down. It is in the wheelhouse of the spring bird migration, with the emphasis on warblers, tanagers, grosbeaks, buntings and orioles. But there is so much more, like the breeding plumaged sandpipers strewn up and down the coast. We average over 200 species during that time, and it is simply amazing birding - I mean NUTS - for five mind-boggling days.

Like last year, the cost is $400, and it includes transportation and guide (me). Jokes are free. You provide your own housing, buy your meals, and any entrance fees (these are rare). We go in one of the GOS vans, but spend about 65% of the time walking or standing outdoors.

Places we visit include San Bernard, Brazoria and Anahuac NWR, Brazos Bend State Park, Quintana, Bryan Beach, all over Galveston Island, Bolivar Flats, Follet's Island, Texas City Dike, Carbide Ponds, and much more. I am planning to go inland one morning not conducive for migrants, to get many woodpeckers, tits, wrens, nuthatches, some resident warblers, etc. On these (south wind) days, songbird migrants are actually easier to find inland, in places like the Houston Arboretum. Where we go each day will depend on the weather.
