Galveston Ornithological Society
Springsong Bird Seminar
This annual week-long event
in the height of the spring bird migration visits all the great places on
the Upper Texas Coast, recording well in excess of 200 species. Songbirds
get the ink, but the shorebirds are equally well represented, including such
lovelies as Buff-breasted, Baird's and White-rumped Sandpipers, Golden
Plovers and Hudsonian Godwits.
Still, little compares to
the trees full of warblers, orioles, tanagers, grosbeaks and buntings. We
will see over 20 species of warblers, plus the orange of orioles, the reds
of tanagers and the blues of buntings. Usually at least one fallout happens
each week, but many afternoons are just crazy with birds even without
inclement weather.
This year, we are taking
Wednesday off, so visiting families can "vacation" in Galveston, and have a
break from the pace of birding all day. You may visit the Strand, Moody
Gardens, the beach, have leisurely meals at our seafood restaurants, sit in
the pool, or bird on your own.
By Saturday night, we will
have visited High Island, Anahuac NWR, Bolivar Flats, San Bernard and
Brazoria NWR, Quintana, Sabine Woods, Texas City Dike, Brazos Bend State
Park and all over Galveston. Sunday is a travel day, although there may be
something in the offing for any folks who want more!
The cost of the SSS has
actually been reduced to $350, and includes transportation and guiding. You
are welcome to pick your own hotel, or stay with friends. There may be room
for local people joining us for a day, but the above price guarantees you a
seat. Really, the SSS was set up for visitors who have never experienced the
peak of the spring migration in Texas.
Now, check out some of the
