Whirlwind Rio Grande Valley Trip

You will never see more birds in four days than you will on this trip! We leave early Thursday, January 17, and take the back roads along the bird-rich coast of Texas. Huge flocks of geese, dozens of hawks, and always some surprises will highlite day one. We'll stop at Aransas NWR for Whooping Cranes, and wind up at Laguna Atascosa NWR for Green Jays, chachalacas and kiskadees. And all this is just the first day!

Day two begins with mighty Santa Anna NWR, loaded with Mexican species we never see anywhere else. Then there are several excellent birding locations in the Brownsville/McAllen area for the afternoon. That evening we'll see the Green Parakeet roost, before heading back to the Alamo Inn, where we stay all three nights.

Day three begins at Sable Palm Preserve, with excellent forest birds, resacas full of great waterbirds, and an excellent chance for Gray-crowned Yellowthroat. From there, we check for Tamalipas Crow, ride around the trash dump, and eat in that cool place yall like so much, the Ice House. In the afternoon, we head out Boca Chica Blvd to the Gulf, and ride down the beach to the Rio Grande mouth. Zillions of birds there, out over the Gulf, and what a neat place! On the way back, we see for the Red-crowned Parrot roost.

Day four isn't your usual travel day. We go early to the De Wind's feeders, which is the highlite of the trip. We also see a few other places before noon, and then take off north, arriving home early evening.
