On-line Birding Courses

Send an Email to Jim Stevenson if you are interested in the courses which have been offered on-line.

Lessons will appear in your mailbox early morning, Monday through Friday, but may be read and studied anytime that day, or later. Each lesson is several paragraphs, with pictures attached (compressed for easy transmission). There is no homework or tests.

The course lasts 40 weeks (200 lessons), and this year’s course teaches all about the behavior and other “secrets” of birds: courtship, migration, reproduction, jizz, anatomy and physiology, and characteristics of the various families. When completed, the student should have a very in-depth understanding of birds, their biology, and secrets to their survival.

One of the primary sources for information taught is Sibley’s Bird Life and Behavior

Below are some comments received after the first year's ID course, from participants:

I thought the lessons (and photos) very interesting and especially enjoyed the personal comments about individual bird species. I printed the lessons and intend going back when I identify each bird in the field and reading the particulars about same. It was definitely worth the small expense, time and effort it took to complete the course.
Nancy Jewell, Houston, TX

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Jim Stevenson has a wonderful way of presenting valuable and interesting information that truly makes it a joy to learn. His lessons are condensed into an easy to follow daily format that provide the most information in a limited space. I was surprised to discover how much I've learned! I would personally recommend this course to anyone interested in exploring the world of birds."
Sharon Kersten, XE Ranch Nature Preserve, Milam County, TX

This is a fabulous course, especially for people who have a passion for birding but not enough time to devote to it. The daily lessons are informative and often humorous (though eliciting a groan as often as a chuckle). It was certainly well worth the nominal fee. The worst part was when it was over!
Kathy Roye-Horn, Flemington, NJ

The online birding course is just a wonderful daily dose of our favorite friends especially for the busy person that WANTS to be a birder but does not get to do it as often as one would like...it's short, interesting, has pictures, and comes replete with Stevenson's humorous pen.
Kelly Trlica, Friendswood, TX

If you want to learn as much as you can about birds and the environment, this is probably the best investment of your time and money you can make. The lessons are thorough, informative, interesting - and entertaining, to boot. Maggie Petsch, Galveston, TX. Jim's on-line birding course has been a treasure-trove of information about birds and birding. I am grateful to have been a part of this learning experience and look forward to future opportunities.
Dianna Eickhorn, Crystal Beach, TX

I am an avid beginner to bird watching and the online course provided me
with a daily bird "fix". This daily focus helped to reinforce the previous day's information and provided a natural progression for the new info. I would recommend the course very highly. Even though I kept and printed all of the daily lessons, I think I will probably take it again for the daily involvement.
Dennis Carlton, Galveston, TX
