The Society lends expertise and support for the Galveston/Houston community in many ways. The Director created documents necessary to get Galveston on The Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The first group was formed in 1996. Members help protect nesting colonies of shorebirds, participate in trash pick-ups, conduct programs to eliminate alien species such as tallow trees, plant fruiting trees to feed migrating birds, and create wetlands for water birds and amphibians.

Publications include articles for newspapers such as the Houston Chronicle, Alvin Sun, The Beach Sun, Bolivar Triton, Galveston Journal, Texas City Sun, and Galveston County Daily News. The GOS also published three nature newspapers, including Gulls n Herons, The Midnight Sun, and The Arizona Desert. These publications, plus the four published books, help the GOS achieve its goal of public environmental education and conservation.
